Some disabilities or chronic illnesses are not obvious to others, which can cause confusion or skepticism about a person's need for support. People may sometimes judge disability based only on appearance.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative was established to foster inclusivity, acceptance, and understanding. This symbol enables individuals to voluntarily indicate that they have a hidden disability. Wearing the Sunflower signifies that the individual may need additional support, patience, or consideration.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower signals to others, including staff and health professionals, that the wearer may need extra support, assistance, or time. Since launching in 2016, it has been adopted worldwide by major airports and venues.
The belief that individuals with disabilities are unable or unwilling to travel is inaccurate. Many people with disabilities both wish to travel and are fully capable of doing so. Worldwide, approximately one billion individuals live with some form of disability; while some disabilities are visible, many are not readily apparent.
One in six people worldwide has a disability, and up to 80% of them—over 1 billion individuals—live with non-visible disabilities.
Some disabilities are visible, while many are not immediately apparent. These non-visible disabilities may be temporary, situational, or permanent, and can include neurological, cognitive, physical, sensory, respiratory, rare diseases, and chronic conditions like asthma or diabetes.
Given the diversity of these conditions, individuals encounter a range of unique access needs and daily barriers. The Sunflower can be worn as a discreet identifier in shops, workplaces, on public transport, or in other public areas to ensure recognition and support.
Since 2016, organizations in sectors such as retail, travel, transport (including over 300 airports), education, healthcare, government, entertainment, and finance have joined the global Sunflower network.
The Sunflower has now been launched locally in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, Latin America, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the UK, the UAE and the USA.

Individuals around you may inquire about how they can provide assistance. You or your caregiver can utilize the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower to inform those familiar with the Sunflower initiative about the additional support you may require.
There is no definitive list of invisible disabilities; individuals may choose to wear the Sunflower to signify that they may require additional support, assistance, or extra time.
The Sunflower symbol doesn’t focus on the invisible, it triggers a simple question ‘How can I help you?’ to focus on the support or understanding you need. Simply by wearing the Sunflower, you’re letting everyone know that you might need extra help, understanding, or just more time.
Sunflower products are strictly not for resale by individuals or businesses. Many Sunflower Business members choose to distribute Sunflower products to colleagues and customers, and they agree to do this for free.
