Some disabilities, conditions, or chronic illnesses are not immediately apparent to others. This can sometimes lead to misunderstandings and disbelief regarding the genuine need for support by individuals with non-visible conditions. There may be instances where people question whether an individual has a disability based on their appearance alone.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower was created to encourage inclusivity, acceptance and understanding. The Sunflower is a tool that allows individuals to voluntarily disclose they have a hidden disability. By wearing the Sunflower, you are indicating that you may require additional assistance, understanding, or time.
Wearing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower discreetly indicates to people around the wearer including staff, colleagues and health professionals that they need additional support, help or a little more time. Since its launch in 2016, it has now been adopted globally by major airports and venues.
It’s a misconception that people living with a disability don’t want to, or can't travel. They do and they can. Globally one billion people live with some sort of disability and while some experience a disability that is visible, for many it is not visible.
Globally 1 in 6 people live with a disability. And of those, it is estimated that up to 80% are living with a non-visible disability. That is over 1 billion people.
While some experience a disability that is visible, many have a non-visible disability that is not immediately apparent to others. These can be temporary, situational or permanent. They can be neurological, cognitive and neurodevelopmental as well as physical, visual, auditory and including sensory and processing difficulties. They also include respiratory, rare diseases and chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes.
As diverse as these conditions are, so are your individual access needs and the barriers you face in your daily life. So you can opt to wear the Sunflower to discreetly be seen in shops, at work, on transport, or in public spaces.
Since its launch in 2016, businesses from every sector have been joining the global Sunflower network - ranging from retail, travel and tourism, transport including over 300 airports - as well as railway networks, coach and bus services and ferries, education (universities, schools and colleges), healthcare, central and local government agencies to football teams, theme parks, theatres and financial institutions.
The Sunflower has now been launched locally in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, Latin America, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the UK, the UAE and the USA.

Individuals around you may inquire about how they can provide assistance. You or your caregiver can utilize the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower to inform those familiar with the Sunflower initiative about the additional support you may require.
There is no definitive list of invisible disabilities; individuals may choose to wear the Sunflower to signify that they may require additional support, assistance, or extra time.
The Sunflower symbol doesn’t focus on the invisible, it triggers a simple question ‘How can I help you?’ to focus on the support or understanding you need. Simply by wearing the Sunflower, you’re letting everyone know that you might need extra help, understanding, or just more time.
Sunflower products are strictly not for resale by individuals or businesses. Many Sunflower Business members choose to distribute Sunflower products to colleagues and customers, and they agree to do this for free.
