According to a Media Release by the CDC on May 14, 2024, drowning deaths are on the rise in the United States. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children and adults with ASD and are at a significantly higher risk of drowning than the general population. They are160 times more likely to drown than other children. Drowning incidents often occur in bodies of water near the victim's home, such as ponds, rivers, or lakes with most incidents occurring between 12 PM and 6 PM.
Drowning is preventable. Accessibility Bridge believes in awareness of water safety AND drowning prevention. Each summer, we host water safety days at a local pool to provide information and resources to families seeking swim lessons, swim teams, private lessons, or pool communities that are inclusive and accepting of people with disabilities.
Complete the Water Safety Interest Form to get on our list to receive information about our Summer 2025 Water Safety and Family Days at the pool. (Pool located in Charles County, Maryland)
According to the American Red Cross, primary barriers to learning how to swim were related to access and convenience. Affordability and lack of nearby pool access was identified as top barriers. Donate to our Water Safety initiative and potentially save the life of a child.
